Exhale

It’s been two weeks
  since
my words played scrabble
  with disease.
Since each breath smelled of
  bad habit.
Fourteen days since my syllables spit
  nicotine,
since my lips puckered and each crease
aged as I spoke.
336 hours since my lungs were suffocated
  with cellophane,
since every inhale choked on reality
and every exhale released
  my stress.
20,160 minutes since my fingers huddled
around the fire
since my thoughts went up
  in smoke.

But only one second since I’ve
  craved
.......a cigarette.

Author notes

"Habit is stronger than reason."

-
"Smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics"

-
"If not quitting for myself, I shall quit for the little life that would be lost without his mommy"

Never have smoked, but can realte it to eating, and how one cannot stop when one has the urge to eat - takes mind control to quit, and real dedication. Perserverance - hang in there.

It has been six years now for me. Hang in there hon. It gets easier. I promise. Plus the reward is a deeper understanding of the human condition. Your view of the world and your fellow human beings will change. It is very interesting and the beginning of a new and more independent life. ~May the Goddess and God BLess You, Peace, Gar~

I've been soo busy lately. I'm so proud of you for quiitting. Just remember, every puff winds the clock of death forward. If you every doubt yourself, just look in a mirror and say to yourself "I will not smoke" or something like that. Its all about coming into the realization of how nasty and horrid cigarettes are. Just keep going forward!

good for you. this was a great write. i knew what you were talking about at the first stanza. but i loved how you waited until the last word to say cigarette. i read your page, and you must love your son very, very much. he's a very lucky boy, to have his mom, and to have his mom give up cigs for him. i know what dropping an addiction means, and i wish you a lot of luck. but yea, great write; loved it.

    Ahh, so satisfying!

I have also recently quit, and thought about writing a goodbye poem to my American Spirit smokes. There are so many superb lines here it's hard to choose a favorite, but I think "Fingers huddled around the fire" is so great, especially as it's cold here now in Kansas--no more shivering in the smoker's hut. Good for us who are quitters!

This is an awsome piece! I love the references to the minutes and hours throughout the piece and then at the end you said it has only been a minute since you've craved a cigarette. Very clever! I can definately relate to this. Great job!
