cancer is life's revolt against unnatural stress
cells that simply start multiplying chaotic
the continue living and growing long after the patient has died
you can't cure cancer unless you cure society from pollution
    both chemical and spiritual

while many cancers are caused by abnormalities in transformed cells and genetic material, not all abnormalities are due to effects of carcinogens. some cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities are acquired through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth.

pollution plays a major role, we may control it, but it's unrealistic to think that it will ever go away, unless we seize to exist. as for spiritual healing, anyone with the disease would drop dead if they relied on such rubbish. a sense of well being, and a belief in one's self is important, but even will power can not cure the flu.

Thank you for sharing this kind of insight. It is so amazing to see young minds so aware and conscious of the realities we are experiencing in our planet, also because this is a living picture of what we want to see, cures being found and natural resources used wisely, way past the adolescent stage in which mankind lives, where there are so many misplaced values placed upon greed and domination, in lieu of realizing that such activities are only inching us closer to self-destruction. But the more and more persons like you in the coming generations are aware of this, the more beautiful and promising the future seems, for people like you are a treasure and example of the attitude, moral values and priorities we all need to embrace. Best wishes in the contest!

Hey, haha, you know what's weird? I was just checking out your page after having read the comment you left me on that Plath essay, and then clicked on this piece only to discover you had entered it in my contest. So well you're not anonymous anymore sorry. But be reassured because this is good stuff. So I don't know who Akrit Jaswal is but what (s)he inspired is great. Thank you very much for entering.

Akrit is a child genius, considered to be the smartest boy in the world. he became a surgeon in his native india at the age of 7, and performed his first successful operation on an 8 year old girl when he was just 7 years old. he is on the verge to discovering a cure for cancer, through oral gene therapy. he wants to develop a chemical drug that is able to modify the human genome, and replace defective genes with normal ones. he is currently studying to get a science degree. i think he's now 13. his wish is to cure each and every human disease. he is a beautiful person.

Wow, that's incredible. I'd have never thought that possible. It's certainly a very altruistic dream he has. In a way though, I've come to realize lately that death is absolutely necessary in our world. So, though it would be a great thing to find such cures, it'd also be of great importance to diminish natality meanwhile. We're smothering other species. We're killing the earth. I'm not sure humanity is ready yet to "live longer". People won't educate themselves, won't use contraception, and are giving birth to families of 5-10 kids. So until we're ready to make sacrifices and to lower the birth rate, we really can't let the cures on the market. In a controlled environment, however, those cures would definitely make the world a better place. Akrit Jaswal is a great person.

i agree with you on how we're killing the earth, and smothering other species. people who are aware of that should do their part in many different ways. i think it all starts with education and better parenting skills. mega corporations are a big problem in poluting and in stripping the planet of our natural resourses. they're parasites, and most people have no idea how much destruction, and poverty they cause. there is a very interesting documentary on walmart called "The high cost of low price." it unmasks a large corporation's true identity. made in china, or any other third world country means, made by child workers, and people who are paid a few dollars in a month. it's sickening. in just a decade or two, large corporations have also put thousands of family owned businesses out business. corporations have also very low paying jobs, and rarely do they medically insure their workers. they offer medical insurance, but they find ways around it, leaving the tax payer to pay billions of dollars in medical bills. sure, people get to swallow cheap tasty meals, dress in designer clothes for only pocket change, in the meantime, billions of factory and farm workers are treated less than human. how very sad, but sitting on our butts feeling sorry for others changes absolutely nothing.

          ps. excuse my spelling

You know all of what you just said just struck me this year. It seems that with the biology courses and philosophy courses I didn't have last year, certain of these injustices weren't talked much about anywhere else. So I think like you that education is probably the key to this problem. Too bad though that in spite of the education most of us have to remain so indifferent about the fate of the earth...

we are desensitized at a very young age. the media plays a big role in this, but a lack of parenting skills plays an even bigger role in this issue. it should be up to our parents to shape our minds, and to instill good ethics in their children, not up to a banner, or the television. it would be foolish to blame the media, as in the end, it's the hand that rocks the cradle that is responsible. what a magic word education is..

Wow! This is awesome. The imagery in this was amazing. The word choice you used to wrap the emotion and thoughts of this wonderful piece were brilliant. God bless you in all that you do and write, and best wishes to you and your poem in the contest. I hope you win.
