Crystal Ball

I think I was in love before
But that was long ago--
(thriteen is a million years away
from my eighteen years)

I think I can't get him out of my head...
although I don't know his face, his life, or his heart.

I'm different now,
but I still see an optimistic
thriteen year old in the mirror.

My shadow soulmate never changed--
just some warm hand on my shoulder,
from a dream growing cold.

Marriage is my fate;
a life of drudgery in return for
my devotion.

There is no man who can be
a good husband, a good father,
and a good lover.
I don't want to choose between
contentment, kids, and kisses.

Time to stop looking into mirrors,
and look through the bottom of
my shot glass
to see what will happen to me.

Author notes

14. “I'm never going home
I walk among the ghosts
Of all my former loves
And all my future selves” – The Collapse

I worked with this as best I can, because the song quote is truly marvelous....I may have to look the band up on youtube....

a strong beginning, particularly lines 3 & 4. i get the feeling that many people can relate to how your piece begins. "shadow soulmate" and "a dream growing cold".. i like it. a sort of hopelessness comes through each line, progressively growing as the piece goes on. impressive. the lines "There is no man who can be... contentment, kids, and kisses" are some of the best i've read in a while. and to finish in such a great way certainly adds to your poem's strength. a shot glass as a crystal ball. congratulations on a piece well written and thanks for entering my contest. best wishes with your future writing

You didn't even use the quote in the poem as you were supposed to...
