The dog’s barking alludes to the mail
and you rush to the door heart in hand.
You hoped for a letter to arrive,
nervously twirling your wedding band.
The envelope holds a hint of musk,
instantly you flash to his parting.
Your tour of duty done, “why reenlist?”
you argued vainly, tears smarting.
Your heart's pounding in trepidation,
its rhythm fueling anxieties climb.
Angry words that foster bitter tears
melt away with the passage of time.
Opening the letter a smile appears,
joined by more as his words set them free.
Inked on this parchment from sandy dunes
a man in pain pens a heart felt plea.
Sorrowful feelings flow from the page
weeping and beautifully expressed.
Down in the deepest part of your being
you’re hurting and feeling depressed.
You devour every sweet nuance penned,
every succulent slice of candied hope.
Time is one thing you cannot defeat,
borrowing his strength you try to cope.
You kept a letter trimmed in black,
its typed message smeared in pools of tears.
“Killed in action by friendly fire,”
arrived yesterday, it feels like years.

Oh my God! The ending...I feel tears coming. It is beautiful, Emile. it is an amazingly, beautifully, tragic poem. I cannot begin to describe the emotions that this poem sends through me. Beautiful, Emile. Simply beautiful.
