Christmas Tears

I sit in thought of those this year
who will not feel life’s Christmas cheer,
no presents wrapped beneath a tree
or banquette lunch for them to see.

Children homeless caused by war
this year will hold for them no more,
than tears seen rolling down their face
with only fears that they’ll embrace.

A world apart from yours and mine
we’ll eat our food, we’ll drink the wine,
fill the kids with chocolate sweets
whilst others wander on the streets.

Searching, hungry, cold in pain
on them our backs we’ll turn again,
victims suffering on their own
we close our eyes and leave alone.

Behind close doors, yes who will care
about the homeless left out there,
who’s Christmas day is spent with fears
seen through floods of lonely tears.

What a sad poem this is for Christmas but the reality is that there will be many people who spend Christmas like this. I find it quite refreshing to see there is another soul on this Earth who cares enough to write about those who are often forgotten at this time of year. Apart from the people you mention there are many more who will spend Christmas feeling sad, lonely or both. Those who have no family to share it with and those who are far way from those they love. The real meaning of Christmas has been lost among the hype and frivolity of the season and I wonder how many people will even give some of those sad people a thought, let alone take some action to ensure that future Christmases are happier for them. This is an excellent poem with beautiful rhythm and rhyme. I wish you all the best in the contest.
