Girl, Glow, Ghost

wandering out through the night
a lantern held forth to guide the way
feelings of fear overwhelm
cold bites through tender mortal flesh
the knowledge that this is foolish
unallowed but occuring regardless
unable to turn back
curiosity controls all sense
the moon beams down
then recedes
heightening anticipation
fear
and second thoughts
it is too late
something is rustling above
a creature now descending
frightful to see
majesty contained in years of hatred
felt in the bones of the confused human
the scream cannot break free
the body freezes
nowhere to go but where you are
moments pass as an eternity
a step forward reveals no change
in position of the beast
nor expression
another step is ventured
the light falls upon the creature
and everything disappears
suddenly returned to bed
from a nightmare
a dream
never to be confirmed
but too real to be denied

Author notes

Picture inspired.

Wow...I felt it, I wrote it, I lingered, and I let go...I didn't expect that to happen! It just...did. I saw, I started writing, and everything came on its own. It was an amazing feeling, and I have no desire to change a thing [except typos I blame on my speedy typing]. I need to do that more often! The inspiration was intoxicating.

Thanks for this contest, Miss Azlyn!!!
