in the span of a minute
friend, father, stranger
quietly slips away
leaving in his place
decaying organic matter
littering our sidewalks
rudely blocking our path
as we head to important places
to our important lives
as he had done moments before the break
lapsing into cold.
one less person to compete with.
it's a dog eat dog world
any time we pay attention to others
is a moment not focused on us;
a moment of weakness.

not my best piece
but interesting contest, thought I might as well submit something.
A contest entry
- rendezvous with a dead man and then some by vertigo beat.

Yes I think you nailed it here.
so many worries about ourselves and not what is going on around us. Sad actually but oh so true.
It is a dog eat dog world and the dogs are out for blood usually.
A good take on this prompt.
