Wilt

We were something like
daffodils in the spring,
yellow and fresh,
ready to glide free of
the heavy black earth.
We found our heart-shaped
bulbs tangled together,
and the sun on our open lips
made us glow.  But
you wouldn’t smile before
winter came, and together
we wilted.  Don’t you know
that these deep-rooted bulbs
are meant to hold sugar?

This is beautiful! What a great interpretation of the prompt. The last lines are a wonderful expression, "Don’t you know
    that these deep-rooted bulbs
are meant to hold sugar?" Good luck in the contest!
