Somewhere far beneath the lights
That glitter and glow and catch the eye,
An unseen world struggles to survive.
Within this shadowed and dark world,
Are many lonely and lost souls
Abandoned by society.
A teen girl lays beside a dumpster,
Crying herself to sleep,
Trying not to think about the troubles morning brings.
A well-worn prostitute leans into a car window,
Trying to lure in her next costumer,
Yet hoping she is refused.
A stripper takes her place on stage to entertain,
Yet all the while she is thinking,
About the two young boys she left at home.
Two men stand in a shadowed doorway,
Hiding from the light.
One is making money off another person's high.
And all of this goes on far away from peering eyes.
It's just easier to be a castaway
Behind the neon lights.
Author notes
I was thinking about neon lights today and how they have the ability to catch people's attention, and then I came up with this. Hope you like it!
