I wake up in the dark,
snow falling gently
down outside.
I hurry downstairs,
taking care to
miss the creaky step.
The tree emits a
lulling glow,
and the ornaments
twinkle in the light.
The gifts are piled up
all around the tree.
The nametags show
the owner-to-be,
and wish them Merry Christmas.
The striped, patterned,
and polka-dotted parcels
seem to draw you in.
Then I hear footsteps,
coming down the stairs.
I spin around silently,
looking into the darkness.
My brother walks into the room,
rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
I sigh with relief,
and I wish him Merry Christmas
in a whisper.
After looking at the presents
one last time, I go
up to my still-warm bed,
to drift back to sleep.
My brother needs his
time with the tree,
and the gifts just
aren't worth getting
up at 4 in the morning for,
no matter how great.
