I shall dream the end of late night news
where each story paints the world
in a mantle of doom
claiming nothing will grow to change tomorrow
from being another deposit of tragedy.

Would love to cherish just one eve
when the sacred sages of the electronic waves
smiled serenely without it being rehearsed,
so proud to say, nothing bad happened today.

Not to dredge up any pathetic tale
just to rip at the gut,
simply say everything is going to be alright,
at least instead of doing their imitations of chicken little.

How sweet would be the parting of despair
they make us feel has no reprieve
left to worry our food will kill us,
all our leaders are hopeless hapless
with no reason to get up tomorrow.

And to have it all just end for one special telecast
(hoping they would take the hint)
that would could ride off into a sunset
free the fears the trail of light is polluted
only leading to a hidden toxic waste dump.

Wouldn't that be great when there would never be bad news on the radio/television or in the newspapers again? In one respect I would say YES, but at the other hand I think we would become bored of all the good things. It's strange, but 'good news' does not sell. People will start gossipping even more than they already do, for be honest, it's much nicer to hear about accidents, fires, crimes etc. than that people tell you "Oh, I am so happy, because....". One evening (without bad news) would be GREAT, but forever...?
It's like the Sundays we have had in the 70s, when cars were not allowed to drive in the streets, because we had to become aware that we could save energy by not always using the car for each and everything. I can tell you, everybody here loved it! But when you are not forced to stay out of your car, nobody does it! It's too easy to take the car in stead of your bicycle. This is a nice poem. It made me think!!! lol.
    Well done. Anna.

Dear Penman - come live in South Africa - we are daily bombarded with negative messages and realities. I enjoyed the 2nd stanza the most - who would not. You took the prompt well and lifted us up to a level of 'stop and think'. Good luck with the contest. Frans
