Was it the bend of free will
that encouraged my fate,
or something mother said
when I was a gangly child
with clumsy edges,
and stilts for legs?

I liked chewing napkins
toilet paper, tissue...
An uncanny pleasure
that to this day
remains unexplainable,
invited the chew.

Grandmother said
there was a deficiency
or biological imbalance.
For me
there was a simple soothing
is all.

Maybe there was the need
to keep the trees alive.
I always loved their height,
and majesty.

But synthetics aren't real.
(although today's tissues
don't taste the same)
Psychological tendencies
wrapped themselves in the soggy wad
once I spit it in the trash.

Paper mache calamity usurped
my personality (I think),
shy and most often quiet.
My mate claims, I chew in my sleep
hum, like eating a favorite delicacy.

I prefer to pen on paper
before posting here
(can't see any reason to alter that).
There's something about parchment
that splendors, envelopes my spirit.

Snapped like a twig underfoot,
creation from the natural
by way of man-made is relative.
Though, I often fail to see the rationale
in art that does not copy life.

Author notes

You have made me hopeful to see this exhibit. There is magic in what the artist has done. He should be a wealthy individual with all the work that went into his fascinating sculpture. Thank you for sharing his work with us.

I am not sure this is what you were looking for in the way of a contest entry but for some reason, when I viewed Beesley's work, it took me back to my childhood, and my odd obsession for paper.

A contest entry

Please be honest but be a teacher not a critic! Thanks!

wonderful poetry here, something from within and then seeing a bit of the world through feelings and impressions, a wonderful showing style in the imagery; very skillful, very artistic...PK

If you live near Montreal definitely go see it! Or if you have the opportunity to see any of Beesley's stuff anywhere - it is amazing.

Thanks for the poem. There is another poem in this contest that uses tree/paper/poem.

I wasn't really sure what I was looking for which is why I had the contest, for exploration. I knew I wanted to see technology and spiritual combined in reaching for art.

I don't think the asides in the parentheses are necessary.

You seem to have a natural sort of way with words - just a feeling I get from reading this. It is a casual sort of easy thing this is.

Appreciate your looking at the contest and giving it a go. Overall, while the poem does have a genuine "feel" which I like, it lacks for me a sort of tension that I think I was looking for with regard to the subject matter.

    Best,

    Lisa
