The Smell

A putrid stench steamed
through the dirty walls
and hovered -

it clung to his clothes.

It festered on
his crisp cotton shirt
and his fresh suit.
So he sprayed another
façade of fragrance

and all was clean.

Then there were cries;
shrouded and desperate cries.

There were bones
beneath tissue skin,
hissing and barking
ricocheting from the
cramped concrete
and damp rags rotting
with many childhoods.

They prayed for the hand
of the Lord,

and the suited laughed.
