She swirled the last drops of dry,
dry martini and
flicked a centimeter of ash
off of her Marlboro Light.
The last thing he said
was sticky, and uneasy, like
the lines on a Hallmark card
written on a bench in a back alley
filled with cigarette butts.
She recalled the series of events
from earlier that morning,
cataclysmic, but insubstantial
in the greater scheme of things.
"Do You Know" by
Enrique Iglesias repeated
for the fifteenth time
on her scratched, black iPod
and she debated changing it,
but made another martini instead.
She drank it without an olive,
and later that night, after
she turned off the two 60 watt bulbs,
she cried herself to sleep.
