The Return

She's sitting on the porch,
Her beautiful baby girl in her arms,
Watching the road in expectance
Of her soldier boy's return

The car pulls up
Two men in uniform solemnly get out
The woman begins crying as the men approach

They climb the stairs
The first man embraces her
She pulls away and continues crying

The second male chokes back his grief
And slowly begins to speak
"Mam I'm sorry for the news
but your husband isn't coming home."

The woman, still holding her child,
Realeases a stutter and asks what happened

The officer slowly recounnts what happened
" It was the night before leave
Your husband was on routine guard duty
The assault came from out of nowhere
He took three shots
One of them hit him in the throat
He died 5 minutes later.
I'm truly sorry to deliver this news."

The two men retreat down the stairs
Returning to the hard tasks of the day
As the woman remains on the porch sobbing.
It was December 23, Such a horrible Christmas

I don't want to to think about how that must feel... wow. Great way of portraying it in your poem.
