I hang my head in the night
after a peek through my misery's window
The burden of another's happiness
is a heavy one to bear
My tears, my gift to you
falling from eyes that you don't see now
are the closest thing to a smile
I can ever hope to muster
But if having the rain on my head
is what keeps it from drenching yours...
if bearing the weight that slumps my shoulders
will keep your posture straight...
Then I'll carry the pieces of my heart
where their presence is best served
away from you
exactly where you want them to be

I think mayhap this picture took me in a different direction than most people, but oh well.

Your story is easy to see in the contest image. Love can be cruel when it is unrequited (which can include: over for one half of a relationship). It can make us feel like martyrs, but we never do surrender. Terrific ending! Those last two line could be swapped with the same meaning, but the order you chose has the stronger impact in my opinion. So glad I got the chance to read this!
