Enemy No More.

Have you ever
watched a man die?
That lifelight fading
in the failing pupils
of his weeping eyes.
Bloody lips whispering "Mom."
in a language foriegn to you,
yet still understood.
His bowels emptying
the reek of death
into air you breathe.
Have you ever wished
that hard for peace?

Anyone who has been in combat- or loved someone who has been in combat- knows that there are things no human being should endure. You've captured the brevity and dark truth of war. My heart hurts to read these words and yet, I think everyone should have to read them, that we might never have to live them.

    Very true.

I just wanted to say that I really like your poem, and I completely understand what your saying. Me and my best friend Mike had a conversation about just this when he came back from Iraq. I like it a lot.

    Wondering

Have you ever watched a friend die.
    Eaten slowly from inside.
    At war with cancer
    and losing.
    Never uttering a word
    of complaint
    Always smiling
    as he endures
    his final days,
    hours and minutes.
    Have you every watched
    a friend die
    as he dies inside
    and outside
    before your eyes.
    And heard that final breath
    as it fills the air
    with his departure.
    And miss him so much.

Wow. That is the word that comes to mind - and it doesn't even come close. This is a very intense string of words, very touching. Great!

Oh wow. I'm not quite sure what to say about this. It's so powerful and profound but at the same time one of those pieces that can be understood by all. Thank you
