As I lay here between these hospitals sheets
I watch you sleep; your head lies against my thigh.
Your fingers still entwined with mine.
I do not cling to this life of pain,
for the sake of living itself…
It is you who keeps me breathing
I have not slept yet tonight
and I grow tired with each passing hour
This pain medication they have put me on barely works
Yet I refuse to close my eyes and succumb to sleep
I live only for you…
I know I should rest.
But I know if I close my eyes tonight
Tomorrow I will never wake
So I will not sleep
I run my fingers through your hair
Did you know that you smile as you dream?
Let me rest in the early morning light… with my last thoughts being of you

The woman here is terminally ill with cancer... that was the disease I had in mind while writing it....
I know the effects of this disease all too well.... my mother died from it.

I've had many relatives that have passed away with cancer, or currently are struggling with it, and it is definitely a hard thing to see them go through. This was sad and touching and reminded me of my family members that have passed.

A very deep and touching piece of poetry

This was shy on emotions. The poetic devices seem non-existent beyond emotions though. I do relate to the meaning of this poem but the poem has no effect on me though.
