The Cult of Victimism

There is an ideology being pushed here in America, which i personally think is the most dangerous form of mind control ever devised. No, I'm not talking about communism or socialism or fascism.there are no flags or slogans that tout it's purposes. it has no leaders or face-men. I'm talking about what I call "victimism".

Victimism is the act of convincing yourself that you are a victim. You are not in control, and are not accountable, for anything that goes on in your life. A victim has no power, except to whine about being a victim. a victim has no rights except those granted him by his "opressor", who is to blame for everything in the victim's life. a victim cleaves dependantly to those who appear to be his "liberators"- those who promise aid (often for a price).

I would like to state that the only real victims are the dead. Everyone else has the ability to change. Even those paralyzed in accidents or by disease can adapt,and find new ways of living within limitations. I know...I've had to myself. But a victim can do nothing to better himself. He is never in control. Everything in his life is somebody else's fault, and he is being "kept down". Prisons are chock full of "victims". Their mantra is "it wasn't my fault! The system messed me over!"

Another place you will find "victimists" is on the street. They are the bums who reek of alcohol and/or drugs. they always have somebody to blame, too. "I can't get a job because nobody wants to hire left-handed people!"

our society has done little if anything to curb this mindset, and to an extent even encourages it. Some sympathetic, well meaning do-gooders take up the sword of championship for someone who appears to be a helpless victim, only to find out too late that they're being taken for a ride by a freeloading "victimist". but there are more sinister forces at work. "Victimism" has it's allies and it's benefactors. These are the lobbyists who push the "victim" mentality into the political arena, usually for some kind of monetary or political gain. it's these who encourage "victims" to stay "victims" and those looking for a free ride to find ways of becoming "victims" themselves. "You say that somebody told you a handist, anti-lefty joke? OH THE TRAUMA! You should sue 'em for at least five million!OH THE HUMANITY! We need to stop this sort of thing! it is a HATE CRIME!!!!"

of course, the lobbyists always want to push for new laws that will legitimize their causes, however ludicrous and one sided. "New legislation was presented before congress today, requiring all pencil manufacturers to make special left-handed models of all pencils available. these so-called 'lefty-leads' will be distributed to all public schools at taxpayer expense. also in the news from capital hill, lobbyists are picketing outside the capital building to make the word "southpaw" hate speech, punishable by up to fifty years in prison, now for the weather, back to you, Bob."

You are only a victim if you see yourself as one. if you want to strip yourself of all power, and become a whimpering social parasite, fine. Go do that. Me, I like having some control over my own life,and some accountability, even if it means being called a Southpaw. or a Cripple. or Whitey. or a Patriarchal Male.

Sticks and stones...

Nowhere in the Constitution are you guaranteed the right to an offense-free life.

      a southpaw is a left-handed person (the term comes from baseball. Left-handed pitchers are especially hard to hit) The term southpaw itself is not demeaning, but i use it here to show how a simple slang term can be taken so far out of context that it becomes a slur.

      i'm ambidextrous, but i use my left hand a lot except for writing, and even that sometimes. i guess i could be considered a southpaw

    this is somewhat overwhelming at first;
    but then as it goes on I can see better where you're coming from.
    I agree with most of this;
    but also humans are weak as a rule and the alcohol/drugs thing is hard to stop when you start;
    obviously a sensible choice would be not to start at all,
    but sometimes it can't be helped.
    if that makes any sense.
    Bravo.

      humans are not so weak as to be helpless. I understand how people make bad decisions in life, but they still have the power to overcome addictions. there are support systems available if you need them, and there's nothing wrong with using them, but wallowing in self-pity never fixed anything.
      the choice is yours. do you want to be a victim, or a survivor?

    This is an essay, not a poem, at least in my eyes. That doesn't devalue what this work has to say. Rather, it is just in the wrong place.
