The End of a Going

Missing image
The first snow drops modestly, a few crystals at a time,
hardly noticeable but cause for asking

“Is that snow?”

As if it could be the frozen tears of an Angel
or draw other plausible explanations,

and we must be cautious
because if it is what it appears to be
it is the end of a going
and the beginning of a coming-

The time, when for season’s change,
to put on heavy clothes
for long days when the sky hangs low
sodden with grey truths
and memories that wait for us.

Large chunky flakes swagger winter’s arrival
with flurries of promise and of more to come
just enough for children to
ask hopefully,

“Will school be closed?”

while wanting only YES
as answer for this test.

Familiar landmarks lose their shape
and everything goes back in time
to narrow streets with cars that slow,
in many places
our footprints
being covered.

I loved reading this. I like how you talk about the things that change with the coming of the snow...the seasons, the clothing, etc. I like the imagery you use, like this one:

"for long days when the sky hangs low
    sodden with grey truths
and memories that wait for us."

I also like what you penned after posing the question "is it snow?"

"As if it could be the frozen tears of an Angel
    or draw other plausible explanations,"

This brings back fond memories of watching for the snow as a child with such great anticipation. Oh yes, snow days at school! I remember them well!

    Congratulations on the Bronze!

lovely descriptions, good use of figures of speech and enough profoundness to make this a very delicious poem
love the idea of snow being the frozen tears of angels.
    and these lines
for long days when the sky hangs low
    sodden with grey truths
and memories that wait for us.
and then in a line or two you transport us from sombre thoughts to the excitedly expectant faces of children so many facets and emotions in one poem.

    Very good!

This poem is a very easy read and flows nicely. Looking forward into winter isn't expressed so much in poetry as the passing of winter into spring but you cover this very well.
