Her velvet skirt gathers around her,
Like a pool of black seas.
It flows over pebbles and twigs,
Where she has sat for many years.
A false hope surfaces in her mind,
As she sees a ship pass her by.
When will he return from open seas?
A wedding ring slowly rusting from her salty tears,
Sits proudly on her fragile hand.
Tears more vast than the ocean currents,
Gallanting beneath her feet.
She knows in the depths of her heart,
That his body has perished and his spirit gone.
Denial motivates her loyal act of waiting,
For his ship to come.
Rocks below look inviting.
His watery tomb will soon become her own.
She stands on her tired feet.
The wind curls her hair round her neck;
Symbolizing a noose.
She scans the horizon for a final time.
She accepts his absence in the world.
Sunset blinds her for a moment,
But she takes a brave step.
Casting herself down.
Her eyes remain on the horizon,
Which now fades to nothing.
Her body a grim mangle,
Upon the ocean floor.
But a remnants of a smile is curved on her lips.
The everlasting torment is finally over!

Wow, this is really deep. It's so sad and touching. I can feel the longing in every line. Great write.

A riveting tale. I was hoping that her husband would find her in the end, even in death. I thought of The Odyssey while reading this and wondered if that story was what inspired this. I like the mysterious element that leaves us wondering what happened to her husband.
Thanks for entering. Good luck in my contest and in the New Year! -
Wow. Wow. Wow. Absolute wow. The imagery is so brilliant. This poem is so brilliant. Damn you Ashlie! Why are you such a good writer? I want to read it again and again! Everything was my favourite line, and great use of title. Not that you need me to tell you. But I'm telling you anyway. It's so nice to have the real Ashlie back
