Wind and Stone

I am stone
enclosed by wind.

We share damp shores.
We hear black
waves break on
charcoal knots
that stud bleak shells
of rotted logs.

We breathe the breath
of pines that sway
urgent needles
sunward, earthward—
elegant arcs
ride surrounding winds.

We taste the trail
of water on air.
We smell and taste
and touch—river
and cove ripe
with wild strawberry.

You lean into the wind,
stroke its smoothness
into glass, release,
evaporate,
and supple-shape again.
You are wind.

You touch and warm
and move with subtlety
into thin crevices,
too thin to see.
You penetrate
dark hollow hearts

of stone

I know exactly whereof you speak - many a time spent on craggy Alaskan shores. Very well done - from the muscles and barnacles to the windbreaker penetrating cold of the wind.

Wow that's very descriptive. I especially like the last stanza:

    'You touch and warm
    and move with subtlety
    into thin crevices,
    too thin to see.
    You penetrate
    dark hollow hearts

    of stone'

It holds so much meaning and can be interpreted in so many different ways. I see it as meaning that the wind (voice) can get through to those hearts of stone (people who have been hurt so much they've given up.) Great write.

Thanks for taking the time to read and contemplate. It is a bit of an abstract piece, inn spite of the focus on concrete image...written as much about my wife (wind) and myself (stone) as anything else...at least as far as my intentions went. But I like what you have found in it as well.

I enjoyed this. A striking anthropomorphism made all the more striking by the application of objects so inanimate. A moving image full of textures and dynamics. I give it the PerV seal of approval... not that you need it, just because.

    Fascinating metaphor ...

... using 'stone' to depict the masculine conscious aspects of strength, unity, unyielding beliefs, permanence and unchanging attitudes; and 'wind' for the feminine unseen, unconscious part of us … the life force, energy and vigor of the soul. Surrounding the stone with a warm wind that penetrates the heart, in the context of a host of rich symbols of creation, illustrates the transforming power of love with sheer elegance. This piece is breathtaking. Thank you. Warm regards, Sultan
