II. the tints

iv.
    apple red
incited eons of sin to follow--

forcing humanity
outside the walls of eden
and beyond the realm of
satisfied ignorance.

satan’s serpent tongue
flickered burgundy
as Eve surrendered
to temptation,
shattering covenants
sanctified by god
himself.

v.
    blood red
    tainted noble consciences--

inflaming visions
of permanent stains
and crimson misdeeds

until sleep and sanity
eluded Lady Macbeth
beyond her breaking point,
and insomnia threatened no more
from the shallow depths
of her suicide-grave.

vi.
    scarlet red
    formed a badge of dishonor--

attempting adultery’s
exposure and the ruin of
a mother whose crimes
were permitted by laws
rooted deeper than man’s.

but scarlet, too
became an emblem of pride
as Hester Prynne was finally seen
through eyes of acceptance;
admiration; ability;
was ultimately seen
for the woman
she was.

Author notes

this is a work in progress & part II of a bit about "three literary ladies." it's a WIP because I've got the idea (the color red being woven throughout their different stories) but I'm having a bit of an issue making it work as well as it does in my head. suggestions definitely welcomed.

All I have to say is
    I owned this riddle

Lady Macbeth was one kick ass woman for the first half of the play.

      you sure did!
I had fun writing this, for real. I really want to do another, but I'm not sure I'm inspired enough at the moment. Hmm. We'll see.
