The real night before Christmas story

Twas the night before Christmas and everything was ready
The kids snuggled in bed, Danny hugging his teddy

Then me in my gown and daddy in his shorts
Complaining to loud, seems I used too much starch

I hung up the stockings by the fire place in the den
In hopes that ole Santa would fill them again

We finally settled down at a quarter past ten
When a big loud bang woke us up again

I jumped up quite fast, took off in a run
Threw up the window, got blinded by the sun

When I could finally see again
The moon had almost done me in

Its glow on the snow was so darn bright
My eyes saw spots the rest of the night

Then what through my squinted eyes did I see
But a sleigh with reindeer headed straight for me

With a little old driver all dressed in red
I knew it was Santa on top of that sled

Breaking all records, the reindeer were fast
He whistled and shouted as they went past

“Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On Comet, on Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the steps by the south wall
Be careful now, don’t stumble and fall’

Around the house to the back they flew
With his sleigh of toys, shinny and new

And then in a moment I heard a great sound
Santa got stuck in the chimney on his way down

As I  inched back, at least a foot
Down he came all covered in soot

He was dressed all in fur from his head to his feet
His clothes though dirty, still looked quite sleek

A bag full of toys followed him on down
He looked like a peddler tossing them around

His eyes were shiny and his dimples were sweet
His cheeks quite rosy, nose red as a beet

His droll little mouth spread open with a grin
His white beard covered both face and chin

A little black pipe he held onto
While smoke kept rising around us two

He had a kind face and was fat as could be
He shook when he laughed and slapped at his knee

He was chubby and plump, a jolly elf was he
I laughed out loud, thinking he wouldn’t see

He gave me a wink then turned around
Sensing no harm, I finally set down

He filled up the stockings, then looking at me
Back up the chimney, ole Santa did flee

He got in his sled and holding on tight
Wished me Merry Christmas as his reindeer took flight
