Dappled golden mare
With flaxen mane,
Stroking your flank
I feel your strength and power.
We share breath,
The sweet smell of hay,
I offer you mints, negotiate a ride.
A path through the dunes reveals
Wide sands,
Distant breakers.
Nostrils flare at sea salt breeze,
Reined in,
I feel your desire.
Relenting, I say “go”
And hold on tight.
Arrow straight
Towards the distant sea you fly.
Galloping the margin
Where sand and sea collide,
Salt spray flies,
Overhead, gulls shriek encouragement.
I lean forward,
In time with your stride,
Feel the sun and the wind,
Hear you breathing hard,
Sense your joy
Running wild and free.
Golden Horse of the West
I will never forget you.
Author notes
I'm not a natural rider but this horse was special. This poem, like so many that I write, was inspired by Dalaney and is dedicated to her.
I'm here to learn. You are all poets so I respect your criticism.

Beautiful as a natural horse rider you have captured the beauty and the freedom that just riding off into the bushland brings... the wind in your face and just the open spaces, I do love this one

Hi Poetess, thank you for your kind comments on my poem. Since I started writing poetry, eight months ago, memories like that wonderful horse keep flooding back. Poetry means so much to me; it’s not just the beauty of the language, it’s the ideas and thoughts it engenders.
As usual it’s late now and I need some sleep but tomorrow I look forward to reading some of your poems.
Goodnight Poetess

Liked th flow and message shared in these lines - easy to read and understand what you are saying here. Horses look so magnificent when they are running free, their tales and manes flowing in the wind. Lovely visuals you give us as we read these lines. Golden Horse of the West indeed.

I don't ride but admire those who can and do. This captures your moment and that of the Palomino with delightful verve and accuracy.

well...I am a natural rider lol, and your poem aptly describes the feeling of riding across a sandy beach. The palomino are beautiful horses, glad you could enjoy your ride. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Well done.
