Timekeeper

We began as Springtime mornings
Filled with birdsong, sparkling dawns
And golden dreams of noondays yet to come.
We made promises and declarations,
To ourselves and each other,
With pretty words and
Earnest meanings.

Promises we didn’t know if we could keep
And declarations too full of future and
not enough now.

Our years marched on as hours in the day
Slipping away from us without a thought.
Cares of the world and cares of our own
Buzzed at us like flies
In the mid-morning sun.
Occasionally, in swatting at them,
We’d land a blow on each other.

Promises were forgotten and the
Prettily worded declarations fell apart
Like so many puzzle pieces at our feet.

Yet we were not disheartened.

The heat of mid-day
Burned and scorched our resolve
Etching it deeply into our hearts.
The healing left scars, but our hearts grew stronger
And our commitment deeper.

We rested quietly for a time
In our afternoon,
Then rose refreshed,
Eager to take on new challenges,
Sipping deeply from the sweetened lemonade
Of a long life together.

Now we walk slowly through summer twilight,

Holding hands,
Sometimes talking,
Sometimes not.
Memories of past sunsets glow behind us
As we walk easy

Into the gathering night,
Together.

Wow! This is brilliant. I thought it was the perfect length, and beautifully written. I hope someday my wife may write something this eloquent and sweet for me.
The effort and heartfelt sentiment is evident throughout. I especially like the third, fourth, and fifth stanzas. What a lovely chronicle of a life spent together.

it's fairly cute and sweet. the writing is not bad. the vocabulary is decent.
it feels old-fashioned. it's fairly neat.
it does lack a certain zest and power that could turn this into a masterpiece. playing around with structure could help you a lot. remember, poetry has no boundaries.
i think it's a little bit longer than i would have liked it to be, but since it was a gift, it was probably the perfect length.
    thank you for entering
