Raven Feedback

Things I liked:

I like the breakdown and details and work that went into the comments... you seem to seriously take each poem as its own.

I LOVE THE COMMENTS .... (did I say this....cause this was by far my favorite)

I like the categories you had...

I LIKEED!!!! the number of Judges you had per group!!! I think it was minimal 2 ~ Max 4 for one of them... Maybe it was 3 ... but I think something happened with one of the judges.... on that last one.

I liked how you followed the rules~ there was no bending or breaking of the rules.... and it was usually very nicely put.... (yulp... I was one of those illiterates who didn't read before posting... My haste!

I liked you were allowed to enter only once

Things I didn't like:

LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG time it took to judge... < although I know judging 200+ poems can be tedious.

POSTPONEMENTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS TO Close <<<< you know you did.... for over a month you pushed them back...
At least POST the TRUE closing date on the contest page...

but, I didn't think you had enough categories...

What I would like to see in the future:

Unique contest which could include creating styles/forms of poetry.

More categories split out.... Maybe you can combine them back on the later rounds...

I would like to see more people make it to the next round... maybe a percentage per number that enter.

--- Maybe something that was only for new stuff.... (really easy to put prewrites...) I liked having the prewrites allowed...

I would like to see the raven contests maybe monthly~ or every other....(It doesn't have to be about the money~ It can be NO money that builds to the big contest)

I would like to be a raven >>> LOL don't know how you get to do it~ but I enjoy on commenting on work~ and often times give more than my two cents worth... expected or not....

I would also like something for newer writers maybe less than a year... hard part is determining who really is ... and who really isn't ... (Ok so this one might be a bad idea)- Maybe 1st time raven entries.... (Ok, I'm still thinking outside my arse)

all in all you all rocked!!! I didn't win :((~ but I did learn ~ That in it's self was as valuable to me as GOLD~ :D

I applaud everyone involved!!! it truly was nice contest!

In a list

Thank you for your feed back I have learned so much being a judge. I hope you follow though and become a judge. It has left an impact on me. It helped me to see a poem or write from many view points. All I can say is we tried our very best.

    What you liked:

You're right. There was a problem with judges dropping out this year, but it wasn't exactly unexpected (I knew the contest would lose SOME judges, but by the bitter end we were down to 4 out of 15 or so. However (not that you said it did) this did not lead to any contest delays due to the remaining judges picking up the slack. Those who came through REALLY came through.

    What you didn't like:

I have to echo my co-judge completely on this. The contest end dates were adjusted in keeping with the contest rules and these rules were posted on each contest main page. The format, a month to enter and month to judge, was created purposefully to allow people time to enter their best work AND to allow the judges to properly consider the works that were entered. The very essence of the Raven can be found in the reflection of each judge on the quality of the works entered. Decreasing this time frame would have lead to an equal decrease in the fairness and quality of the comments/judging.

I agree with you when you say that the prizes do not necessarily have to be large, however the quality of the comments is something that I refuse to bend on. Contest judges were given STRICT directives regarding comment quality in this 2007 contest, and those rules will continue in coming years.

Speaking of rules, if you are interested in applying to be a judge for 2008, I think that's great. First thing you should do is read the rules in the RCR, especially those for judges. If you are still interested, you can find the application for 2007 on the Allpoetry name Raven Judge. Just fill it out and email it to ravencontest@comcast.net. I will apply the data to next year's application.

What you would like to see for the future:

We did consider having a contest that was just for people under a certain age this year, which sounds a little bit like your new writers idea. The judge pool voted to reject the kids only contest because we just had no way of verifying people's age. I like your idea, but unless we can make it practical it just can't be implemented as the resulting cheating would make it unfair for all involved.

Thank you for your comments and we look forward to seeing you next year either as judge or an entrant.

Hello M Harrison. Thank you for your feedback on this contest as both positive and negative comments will enable us to improve for future years. We are pleased you found the comments, categories, number of judges, rules and number of entries as suitable for this contest.

The categories took a month to judge due to the number of entries, 200 roughly in each category, 1,200 in the contest overall. The judges are from all walks of life, many of whom are at college, work or family people with commitments outside of this contest and their time is given voluntarily.

The preliminary rounds were open from 1st June to 1st July and the final round was open from 1st August to 1st September, each being followed by one month for judging entries. The Raven Contest has to follow the rules of All Poetry in regard to contest judging and closure. Special permission had to be sought for the contest to remain open for a month, which is why you probably noticed the closing dates change, but entrants were notified in the rules of the contest dates. It was up to each entrant to read the rules or not.

Adding further categories for genre, styles and forms to the contest is dependant on the number of judges available but is something to be considered.

The percentage of authors who advanced this year was very high. Not every author who was given the chance to enter into the final actually took up the opportunity.

As the Raven Contest runs over a 4 month period it could not be held monthly or bimonthly. The contest would lose its quality if it was held more frequently as there would be less time for judges to do their job properly. Comments would be shorter and prizes would be smaller.

The Raven Contest seeks to uncover genius in the written word, whether it is in a new write, a prewrite, a poem from a new author or an experienced author. It may be found in any or all of these so each entry is judged from on an equal basis by unbiased judges.

Any one interested in becoming a judge can find all information for this years contest via the Contest Navigational Portal

and should apply by emailing ravencontest@comcast.net
