Lessons

It calls to me
with mother's shrill voice,
nagging thoughts
plaintively haunting
my mind's lazy recesses,

while I procrastinate
between folly and foolhardiness,
wearing ignorance's wistful smile
distorting surety's regret,

amid the black and white
of future's truth,
are drawn lines of
accomplishment,
that I haphazardly trace
with unconcern

and pages of knowledge
drift closed amidst
ego's nonchalant airs,
where stupidity breeds
mind's malcontent,

finally lessons drone
endlessly melodious,
seeping from unconscious
into realms of future desires,

as I grab pen with wastrel hand
to furiously write with exhilaration,
for what is gleaned now t'will feed
the future essence of myself,

and what is not learned
but frittered away,
will twist upon lost horizon's,
where fingers will search
but never again find,
the vibrant colors of
a school day rainbow...
