Edward Lear

There was an old poet called Lear
Who developed a style that was queer
It had only two rhymes
One appeared three times
And caused a lot of Oldpoets to sneer.

Thanks for an informative and humerous entry that tells us not only about Lear but about the style that is forever associated with him. The Limerick. After all that is what the contest was about.

To me Lear and Limericks will always be linked and so it is nice to see his name here in this fashion.

Lear was a master of the Limerick - for instance: and I hope this will encourage others to enter this contest:

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
    Two Owls and a Hen,
    Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

The Owl and the Pussycat has always been a favourite of mine though.    Von
