Ten Commandments

Told right from wrong
Lying is not for good kids
Stealing is not the path to be walked on
Spreading gossip is so not you

Finish your home work in time
Getting good grades all the time
Can’t cut your gym class
Let’s see the report card
Well done, you are on the right path

Importance of education is instilled
Talk about day to day routines
Smoking kills your lungs
You can’t breathe and die
Drinking is definitely out of the picture
You don’t want to end up in the gutter

Now let’s have “The Talk”
Sex is a big no, no
For it’s the biggest sin
& if you do happen to be at the spot
Don’t forget to use the condom
Okay now we are done

Oh I’m sorry I missed your big day
You know I’ve to work to provide for the family
Time is short in the race of career
I’ve to really work harder to get the promotion
Now, be careful, can’t cuss and use foul language
That’s why you’ve got all after school activities
For you to engage yourself in
Without any of my involvements

The phone plays the late night ring
It’s a colleague making courtesy call
Dude, you didn’t get the promotion
I’ve heard it’s Bill sitting at the corner from you
Got all the goods, it should’ve been you instead
There goes the F word
Here comes right behind more F vocabulary
Banged the phone, broke the expensive vase
The satin hidden inside is now out in the open

Concerned family asked of the anger
It’s not the right time to be concerned
In reply gets the spits of rage
And here comes the needed bottle
That has been waiting for so long
I just need to vent it out,
Here comes the cigarette
Light it out to burn the stress
Oh What a dam day!
Frustrated you say

Mom, are you going out on a date again?
That too with the same person!
That’s somewhat promising
Happily she answers, I think I really like him
I can feel it, he’s the one
So, here he is introduced to the family
Everyone likes him; he’s a go all the way

Following morning brings the sunshine
Kids walked into the action
But wait, aren’t you suppose to be married?
Before sleeping on the same bed?
Silly question just popped up
Kids are kids, just ignore them
It’s better than facing the embarrassment
Of facing the lesson we taught our kids

Open communication
Is the healthy way to healthy relationship
Let’s talk how to cut corner before children
So, what if we cheat government?
Everyone does it
It’s legal system that has a loop hole
Then why not use it?

All the lessons well taught
Kids have learnt it all
Lying comes with convenience
Stealing legally is the way of life
Sleeping before marriage is commitment
So, it’s ok to bend the rules
As long as they serve our purpose
To live our life as we may please

Now, go finish your work
Sleep tight
Don’t forget to say your prayers
Be good
And live life as you may please
Under my roof, according to my rules
I’m the adult
You are the kid
Do as I say
Learn as I teach
And remember those Ten Commandments
You know the ones that you’ve learnt!!!

Author notes

We preach what we want to, we teach what we ought to
We set examples on our way, that kids pick up to live by
with confusion in their minds, end being like you and me, an adult
who live as they please every single day, day in, day out

In a list

Please tell me what you think

    So true

The hypocrosy of the grown-up and how well I remember. Growin up and going to a Catholic school I often wonder , why preach what you never practice?

Yep, we adults are hypocrites unfortunately, sadly... the worst are the ones, I found, are who visit churches, temples regularly, it amazes me.... I know I'm not perfect and am sinful, but still at least I try my best not to be a hypocrite... any ways, thanks for your time and supporting comment. appreciate it... take care Minoo

Great! many parents should set a better example for there children When they get into trouble the parent is always looking for some else to blame.

Thanks hun for taking time to reading this poem... I'm not a parent but have seen and worked with troubled kids for 2.5 yrs in the psychology department in a mental health clinic... and sometimes unintentionally, I'm just as guilty of helping kid learn to lie... that's the honest truth, so I keep reminding myself... thanks for your time and support... I appreciate applauds... take care Minoo

    wow!

You nailed this one. Jeez so many parents who won't should read this. But it is hard as being only human as I am. Being the best I can.
My child sits in the stars waiting for the right mom.
And it's getting late. A societal mistake. Hey! I think I'm onto a new one with this comment. Thanks for the idea!

I liked the read, and enjoyed your author's notes just as much. The title caught my eye as I've been doing some studies on the ten commandments and their comprehensiveness as well as applicability today. All in all you are right, it's those who can walk their talk that are most in harmony with themselves.
