Those of us,
gathered here around you
bid you welcome
to this uncertain world.
You, bathed and fed,
yet still awake, will not remember
these early days of your life
which has so much in store for you.
We will lavish love upon you,
until, one day, like a fledgeling,
you will flutter away from the nest
to face what the world then offers.
Later perhaps, as I do now,
you too will write words of welcome
to the newest born member
of our growing family.
