The worldly sort, masked despair,
an illusive carrot in a world full of sticks.
Wishful thinkers, a prayer to the air,
manifest superstition, two dice, two spits.
The concept fleeting, temporal at best,
Fraught with failure, a tank run dry.
We all pretend that of will it’s a test,
alas oft’ met with a shrug, “I tried...”
Beyond the smoke of the funeral pyre
hope springs eternal of a different type.
Heavenly hope trumps earthly desire,
an aspiration much larger than life.
God gave his only begotten Son,
salvation free to all who will come.
One day in Heaven we'll all be one!
True hope is desire plus expectation!
Author notes
"Elpis" is a Greek word in the Bible defined as "Hope of some good with expectation of obtaining it."

Well, I'd copy and paste the parts that I liked the best, but that would require copying and pasting the entire poem here. Brilliant work, and your word choice is thought-provoking. Thank you for writing, and good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for your generous response. I wrote that today. I'm having alot more fun now that I have a little more time and my muse has traded in her wheels for wings.
