Once a month I get a paycheck
Some folks say I have it made
But let me tell you something
I would rather be working anyday~
Six hundred sixty five a month
In my hand for just about two hours
Seems everyone else gets my money but me
And hearing talk I have it made
Leaves my stomach feeling mighty sour~
Part of it goes for rent
To keep a roof over my head
Then there are the groceries
I simply have to be fed
Then there is the car insurance
I have to drive from here to there
Because without a paycheck
These people wouldn't get their share~
Then there is the electric bill
I have to have that too you see
For cooking dinner in the evening
And for getting on the computer
Or just watching a little T.V.
So next time you think about getting disability
Think twice before you do
For everyone gets that monthly paycheck
Instead of the one it's issued too~
Some folks say I have it made
But let me tell you something
I would rather be working anyday~
Six hundred sixty five a month
In my hand for just about two hours
Seems everyone else gets my money but me
And hearing talk I have it made
Leaves my stomach feeling mighty sour~
Part of it goes for rent
To keep a roof over my head
Then there are the groceries
I simply have to be fed
Then there is the car insurance
I have to drive from here to there
Because without a paycheck
These people wouldn't get their share~
Then there is the electric bill
I have to have that too you see
For cooking dinner in the evening
And for getting on the computer
Or just watching a little T.V.
So next time you think about getting disability
Think twice before you do
For everyone gets that monthly paycheck
Instead of the one it's issued too~

My son gets 742 a month SSI.
Thanks for entering. -
Absolutely right on, Susan!
What a great poem about something that most folks would take for granted until it happens to them.
This piece is un-critique-able. There is simply nothing that can be improved here.
Hugs to you!
~John

Very humbling words. I like the tongue in cheek humour...Those who think disability is a holiday, need their heads examined
It's hard enough to make ends meet on a regular pay cheque! I can't imagine disability. Thanks for sharing!

understood
Work is a gift. Not being able to work is not pleasurable and the income from disability doesn't add up to much. This is a somewhat humorous look at a difficult situation. Nice piece. -
Wow!!
I hear You on that one Sis
I remember when my dad was getting paid once a month and boy was that a tight squeeze...
It forced the person to have somewhat decent money management skills...
How fast it goes in the first few days...
Bills bleed the paycheck dry
Thank You for sharing this Beautiful!!
Best wishes to You in the contest
Many blessings too
and much love~ Desire~*~

UGH.... this is TRUE! Effective write. Good luck in the contest.

well done
tis a well penned poem that speaks with such truth, those who need it never seem to do more than just survive, I enjoyed the read, blessings John

Well penned, Sis! Disability is a pittance, and those who collect it do not have it made in the shade. You have to struggle each day just to do what the rest of us take for granted - even sleeping and eating are hard at times for you, I bet.

-
It's a sad tale but true, everyone's got to get their due, and that leaves one big - 0 - for you!

Best of Luck in this contest, Sis!

Wonderfully said!
A truth in our society that most do not understand! Very appropriate image here of the misconceptions of being disabled. Many are living in a poverty state just to get by and it takes a very long tormenting time to get this meager assistance. Most loose everything they worked for in the process. A very great job of bringing the embarasement of a nation such as our out in the open. Hope the leaders of this nation get a chance to read it. They never have to worry about loosing a dime even after retirement. They are set for life. I like this one Susan! It gets me carried away on a rebelious rant though, Ha! Don

Oh man sis this is such an incredible poem. So full of truth. Best of luck in the contest.

My dear sister, I have that same sour taste in my mouth as I too am on disability and get the same check you do EXCEPT, they take a percentage of my check every month due to an over payment they say they gave me like 6 years ago when my husband made a little more money one year so I am only getting around $565.00 a month so I know how much that sucks. Social Security is not all it is cracked up to be and never will be, there are far too many flaws in it and i have me and my daughter. If it wasn't for help from my friends, I would have been on skid row a long time ago

As for your poem though, very well done and very expressive. I'm glad you can tell people what you really feel
best of luck in the contest. be well and be blessed

Well Expressed!
No-one knows what you may be dealing with from day to day.. Unless you share your heart with them, and hope they understand your situation. I for one understand where you're coming from crystal clear. Thanks for sharing, and don't worry about what others think.. You know you, and that's all that matters.
Peace, and much love, Timothy

Thank you for sharing this...
Your honest and forthright poem helps us to appreciate our jobs and no matter how the day at work goes, we are very lucky to work.
I am glad your talent can be used to educate as well as inspire.
Love you lots... Your Sis

thank you~
Thank you all for your wonderful comment...
No it's not any fun to get the money one day and be down to $3.00 at the end of the month if you have that even...and hearing people say oh she has it made doesn't have to work..they wouldn't want to be in my shoes with the cancer I have and yearning to work and get a paycheck every two weeks in my hand...and having oodles of food to eat instead of wondering if your gonna have enough to eat at the end of the month..Personally I think we should get more..those of us who are really sick....$655 doesn't go far at all and I hate the Christmas Ads saying Penny's is having a SALE when you have nothing if very little to put under a tree....
I wanted to do a poem for the prompt TRICKLE
But having $3.00 the other day in my pocket made me write about this..I asked if it could rhyme and she said yes....and I was off....
I get SOCIAL SECURITY from work...but got it due to my cancer....and my heart defect
Again thank you all
Hugs
Susan~~~

excellent
You tell them sis! Some people don't know what it is like to be sick and unable to work. It is so depressing being at home all the time, and then the shortage of $ makes it even more depressing. The check that I get every month comes from all of the money I put into my social security account for OVER 32 years of working! It is MY MONEY..........so everyone can just shut their mouths!!! Nobody WANTS to be sick or disabled!
Good luck in the contest! You told it like it is!
Love ya,
Jeannette

Susan, I sure understand this one. One of my daughters gets disability. It's real hard for her, too. The system isn't a very good one, either. There are people who really need the aid that can not get it, and others who just use the system and do. Everything costs so much. I know what you write is true, and it leaves a sour taste in my mouth, too, that there isn't more help in our country for people who have serious disabilities and illness to face.
You wrote it with flare and finesse.
Karen
