Earth, we are leaving you
but we must save you, do we not
before our trajectories part-
from the bees, to the fauna
to the oceans, to the mighty continents-
how can they all survive without our intervening?
As beings, we must be
so we attribute troubles to you, Mother Earth,
as a reason for being
and to remove the weight of the nothingness above.
Complain not as we tend to your gardens
overgrowing with what we see as weeds-
when we think your heart will stop beating,
when we think your love will die
we wish to stir it. Perhaps we have been created to stir it...
Mother Earth, I do not think we know
how much we really love you,
even need you,
until we see you receding in a windowed porthole
from the distant cosmic sky.
Was it you who needed us,
or we who needed you...?
Can you be happy and survive without us, Mother Earth?
Someday we shall return,
to learn what we will,
or at least to see
what you have cooked-up
during out absence.

Congrats on the bronze in the contest . . . this is a beautiful tribute to our planet. You have captured her frail strength and balanced it with a humorous romp. Well done!

thank you for the comment, lilith, they do so spur me to reevaluate and rewrite for some reason... and this one needed both- I tend to post pieces while they are still rough around the edges...
