I am to sit in this stiff,
hard,
cold chair.
While she
Stands up there,
Moves about the room,
Writes in multiple colors,
Dances her fingers over varied textures,
Knows what will come next,
Paces the direction at her discretion,
Bursts through my confusion.
I hear . . .
"Are you listening to me?"
There was a noise,
a click,
a tap,
a . . .
What was it again?
Please don't be mad . . .
No, not more of the blank, white, cave.
I am curling my fingers around my frustration.
I am giggling, because of the nervous bunnies
hopping in my brain.
And now I made you mad.
Your eyes are angry at me.
No! Don't send me away.
I promise - I'll be good . . .
Or perhaps . . .
Me and my bunnies will do just fine,
To make a choice so we can,
Hippidy-hop all the way home
At least me and my bunnies can hop there together.

Author notes
I work for a special education school where we educate students who are classified as emotionally disturbed, or who have one or more mental health diagnosis of ADHD, ODD, OCD, etc. I love working with these children . . . they are still the most neglected group of students among the general education system.

Great piece...I know all about these children as well. I live with a 16 year old with ADHD, ADD, ODD. I think some of their biggest problems are the parents who believe nothig is wrong with their child or the ones who give them whatever they want. I feel bad for the kids for they will be the ones left out by society when they get older if the parents don't let them grow up...Great piece on a very touchy subject for me.

my grandaughter was born addicted to meth and coke; she has all of the above. For me the ODD is the hardest to deal with; she is also paranoid ... as if those teen years aren't hard enough. thank you for the entry.
