Savanna

Upon its mad, cackling snout
The gnu rib smacked wetly,
And the hyena stopped its laughter only enough
To surmise who had lobbed the gruesome missile.

't was a lioness, still out of breath
From the hot chase, to pass idle time
Had decided upon this diversion.
And rent pieces of the kill flew
All about the sylvan playground.

There the gobbling vultures,
Awaiting their turn, gaped in shock
As their meals became mere toys
For the larger and more powerful creatures.

So roars and giggles, and the whoops of faraway mandrills,
Filled the quickly westering landscape,
And the smell of death in the air
Did little to dissuade
This grim interlude.

Nothing like a food fight among the animals to perk up someones spirits, I needed it! Very funny and very well written!

A clever scene, I really wasn't expecting this when I came here to read.
An enjoyable scene and very original topic.

    LOL@ Tilly....

Actually this produced some vivid images,
    the firght for life,
    the fight for food..
all one and the same in the wild.
    A good write...I enjoyed it.

I've spent many hours watching live cams in South Africa, positioned at different watering holes, some on virtual safaris, seeing kills and feasts galore.. watching the hyaenas chasing off lions and cheetahs, the pack is too much for the cats - and then the vultures move in, a whoosh of wings and everything scatters.. Its a fascinating feast to watch, I even watched a snake swallow an impala, took him a whole day, but he did it.. now THAT is a glutton! lol I realize I've strayed a bit from your write, my apology for that, but I did so enjoy remembering all those visual images, raw nature at its finest, and survival of the fittest. sigh Good job on this one. I liked your twist on things.

    Now this is wild!
    Interesting and bit gruesome.
The cycle of life and death, but
yet..there is no sense of fear,
just nature flowing with the give
and take. Great write. Good luck.
