Work

The alarm screams
banshee like impatience.
The persistance of time
and responsibility shake me awake.

Weary and wanting for just
ten more minute I fumble
for snooze and moan.

One eye opens and the next.
Vision falters and sharpens
like so many pins,
needles, coming to life in my feet.

Exhaustion settles in like
early morning fog on the 405.
The Black Crowes and energy drinks
prime me for the day.

I think of death while unlocking
the store. That time when rest is
accepted and no-one will question
my motivation for time off.

My employees shuffle in,
zombie like and stumbling.
I smile and pump them for
the day and I wonder if they're aware

I'm tired and don't get paid enough either.

I clicked to read this, and now I see it is in one of my contests. Cool

I love it. I can imagine how tired you are. I remember this time of year in retail. In NY I somehow got primed for the xmas rush by the weather. Here, it's just not the same, not that I am complaining, really. The weather is the main reason Todd and I won't move back that, not to mention his crazy family, but we won't go down that road right now.

    Talk to you soon.

I can relate to what you wrote from your prospective too, it isn't easy for anyone. it just seems not matter what end of the spectrum you are coming, we never get paid our worth. best of luck in the contest. be well and be blessed
