I nurtured the world with showers and light.
I was blessed, when I had you, my lovely girl.
And there was abundance throughout the world.
Tables were piled high, in plentiful feasts.
Lazy and swollen, were livestock and beasts.
A most lovely, kind, woman you grew to be.
Hades fell hard, and wanted you, you see.
Famine struck, as I curled up, and weeped.
He stole away life, when he stole you from me.
Long were the days of my broken depair.
Cold, I cursed the world, with icy, arctic air.
I demanded the Sun to steal the blue skies,
I commanded Furies, in Earth's early demise.
Frozen solid from the torrents I cried.
No sunshine on earth, and everything died.
As months change, and I miss you so,
how anguished you must be, in that world below,
then bleak will be this world, and nothing'll grow..
When you're safely back, in your Olympian home,
and I am happy once again, sitting on my throne,
The winds shall return home, at my majestic command.
Once again, the Sun will shine across this dark land.
The feasts will return, and the famines shall end.
This will be my gift, to all the world,
Seasons will change, with colors and swirls.
The birds will dance, mate, soar and sing,
celebrations of harvest, and the Life it brings.
My darling child, I adore you very much,
there's beauty and kindness in your very touch.
Never does a day go by when I don't miss your face,
your subtle, quiet ways, your wonderous grace.
I send you all the love, from here on high,
and will never tell you I wish you goodbye.
Until we meet again,
my dear child,
I love you,
Your Mom
Author notes
I posed this write as a letter from Demeter to Persephone. I wonder how much postage was, back then...lol..
I hope you enjoyed it.
Me
Hades obtained his eventual consort, Persephone, through trickery. Hades ruled the dead, assisted by demons over whom he had complete authority. He strictly forbade his subjects to leave his domain and would become quite enraged when anyone tried to leave, or if someone tried to steal his prey from him. Very few have gone to the underworld and returned.
Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. After her abduction by Hades, she became his wife and Queen of the underworld.
Demeter was the goddess of corn, grain, and the harvest.Demeter makes the crops grow each year. The first loaf of bread from the harvest was sacrificed to her.
Demeter was intimately associated with the seasons. Her daughter, Persephone. In her anger at her daughter's loss, Demeter laid a curse on the world that caused plants to wither and die, the land became desolate. Zeus became alarmed and sought Persephone's return. However, because she had eaten while in the underworld, Hades had a claim on her. Therefore, it was decreed that Persephone would spend four months each year in the underworld. During these months Demeter grieved her daughter's absence, and withdrew her gifts from the world, creating winter. Her return brought the spring.

This screams of the heartache Demeter felt in losing her beloved daughter. I have always adored the ttale of Persephone, so much so that I have pomegranate trees in my yard. This was penned well. Fantastic flow, and rhyme. I applaud the on such a fantastic write!

Good job! I chose to write about this myth too, only I made mine more relevant to my life. Anyway, I love it! It is the story in poem/letter form and with some pretty powerful images. Good luck in the contest!
-
excellent way to retell this classic story. the flow is nice. and overflowin with all of the appropriate images. you definitely made this myth come to life almost as if it could trully explain the seasonal changes. excellent

I know the story well, always was a mythology and fairy tale nut as a kid. this is done with a great sense of the tale and wail. The ice age that made the earth creak the way the other gods begged to have Hades return Persephone to bring the earth spring and sumnmer. Love, Tom B.
