raven feedback

As a new member to the site, I was surprised an honoured to be accepted by your first round of judging after I stumbled upon your contest while browsing.
That said, I don't think that it was promoted well, as had I not been trawling through all of the contests, I would simply never have known that such a specialized event was happening.  Perhaps a notice might be sent out to users, or perhaps I missed such a notice...either way, I consider it nothing more than a rather good deal of dumb luck that led me to find the contest in the first place.

The contest itself...well, I entered my first poem, and, not being a regular user, signed on to find out that I'd qualified with a week or so remaining to write a new poem.  That would have been fine, had I not been scheduled to go out of town (to Death Valley of all places) that week.  As it was, I rushed to get a miserable wreck of a poem in, and, not too surprisingly, didn't procede in the contest.  True, I suppose that would qualify as my fault, but it seems to me that emails should be sent out to qualifiers, even if they've chosen to receive email requests generally from Allpoetry, as I see little harm in it, and it would instantly notify users as to when the next poem would be due...

I found the critiques thorough and well-thought-out; they were a hell of a lot better than any comments I've seen since anywhere on the site, undoubtedly because they were actually thoroughly analytical, something that I would consider paying points to get on a normal basis (eh?).
The qualifying guestbook entry on my page was appreciated as well...cool graphic.

That said, I personally saw little skill difference between seperate poems that qualified and those that didn't, and in my opinion, some that did qualify shouldn't have, and vice versa.  I won't complain - for some reason some fool up there actually gave me an honorable mention but I've wondered who exactly decides who makes or breaks...just curious.

Future suggestions...well, promote it better, for starters.  I don't know what sort of pull you have within the site, but I think you should make it so that all of the users who come online find out about it in some way; that way there would undoubtedly be a larger pool of entries to choose from, standards would go up, and prizes would have greater meaning.  I really have little to critique regarding the judging.  Poetry is poetry.  Anyone who understands what that truly means will know that, as such, there can be no real injustices in this respect, save those due to ignorance (or that fool who decided to say that my poem was bad because its background was too boring), which didn't look like a problem with you fellows.  I found it a gratifying experience overall, most likely due to the fact that I was just starting to come into writing again (from a several-year lapse), and still did relatively well in the contest, but it's is also undoubtedly due to the simplicity in which you executed such a large contest - well done.

Thanks,
Jason

    Hello Jason,

This was my first year as a judge. I feel we did the very best we could. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. When you hold a contest you learn what to change. It was a learning experience for me. It sounds like it was for you too. I hope you continue to write. We all share a passion and love for the written word. I think our goal is to uplift and encourage others to write.
I do agree with your comments.
    Thanks very much
    Brenda

    Hello Jason,

You've come up with some good ideas here and the one concerning emails being sent out is certainly worth considering for next year. We had given thought as to how long each section of the contest should be held open for and thought a month to enter and a month to judge each section would allow authors enough time to prepare for the final round. These times were clearly displayed in the rules of the contest but we do appreciate that not every one might have read them. Many authors also entered prewrites into the final round so obviously the time given is not an issue for all. Perhaps when entering the preliminary rounds next year, authors should consider that is the time to be writing something for the final round should they make it that far, or consider their prewrites.

We will certainly look further at the email option and also into better advertising the contest.

Thanks for taking the time to give us your well considered thoughts and suggestions and we hope to see you in next years contest

I'm curious about one other thing as well: who are you people?

Seriously...who are you? How did you get together and all of that?

The international judge pool this year was banded together by the Raven Contest administration after members of All Poetry took part in a contest to become judges. We are people from all walks of life, some single, some married, some who are at college, some who work, and some who don’t. We have experience in varied genre and style of poetry but we all have a love of it and wish to see others improve their own skills.

Any one on All Poetry may apply to become a judge but they must be willing to commit the time for 4 months and abide by the rules. Any one interested can find all information for this years contest via the Contest Navigational Portal below and apply to be a judge by emailing ravencontest@comcast.net

    Jason,

Thanks so much for your comments. On the promotion angle, I think you make a great point. Unfortunately, this being our first year, the funding (points) was just not there to offer both a decent sized contest and pay for promotion. It is something that we are working on for fixing next year. It would be great if AP would promote the contest free of charge, but I think that if that happens we will have to be established first. Hopefully this year got the ball rolling in that direction.

To answer your question, the decision about who advances and who does not is a cooperative one. The judge pool both discusses and votes on the placement of works. I suppose you could look at any discrepancies, then, as a product of the inevitable compromise that must exist in such an arrangement.

As far as emails, or other notifications, going out to entrants as the contest moves along, thats another great idea. I was just sitting here thinking that we couldn't get the site itself to notify, and we don't have any way of automatically getting entrants email address. But then I struck gold: we could just ask them for their emails when they enter the qualifier! lol This idea will definitely see the light of day next year.

Great thoughts, thank you for sharing them. We certainly hope to see you in the Raven 2008.

    Sincerely,

    Das

      Hello Das,
True, it might take that, but I would think that having a well-organized contest with good prizes (maybe a t-shirt for gold) or some such thing might draw new users - you could pose such suggestions to Kevin and see how he takes them, if at all...I never got a reply to the question that I asked him, but I would think that you might have better odds of that.
With regards to the judging issue (not really an issue, but for the sake of it), could there not be a 'people's choice award?' Making this feasible would require some forethough, but I imagine that a voting system could be set up to allow users to vote for their favorite poem per section via email or some such thing - thus, free, though it might take up a bit of someone's time to count votes and the like.
"we could just ask them for their emails when they enter the qualifier!" - Exactly. That would solve all of -my- problems with the timing...I don't know about others, but it hardly seems as though many are taking the time to write about their experience...
I guess they were either happy with it the way it was or think it's not even worth posting suggestions...hmmmm
I like the idea of it being a semi-annual (or as suggested by another user, tri-monthly event, but I also see the inherent problems with such a prospect - necessary increased $$ for promoting and winner points as well as...it would suck for the judges). Still, is there any possibility of that?

        Jason -

Not really. To keep the quality of the RC where it is presently is requires money and points, but more importantly, it also requires a lot - read: a freakin' ton - of time. To ask people to commit more than just their whole summer to the contest is not really going to work out. This year there was a gigantic problem with the judge pool, for example. We had a lot of people who just couldn't handle what the contest demanded and they dropped out. The resources are just not there to organize the contest any more frequently than it already runs.

I think your idea of a people's choice award is another winner. We'll have to put our heads together to see how it would be the most feasible, but I think the idea itself is great. Thank you.
