Dragon Slumber

Clouds are thick
And the air is heavy
With the scent of rain.
I sit quietly
Listening to the dragon's slumber.
His belly rumbles
And smoke rises from
His nose.
A bird passes by,
But still,
The dragon slumbers.

The rain pours down
And lightening cracks
Thunder shakes the
Wet earth.
But still,
The dragon slumbers.

The warrior cries out
And raises his sword.
He blesses himself
And strikes.
But still,
The dragon slumbers.

Blood pools on the cave floor
And his color begins
To fade away.
His eyes open briefly
and he gives out
one great roar.
Then his eyes flutter, close.
I cry in grief
And lay along side
the dragon.
I cry for him to return.
But still,
The dragon slumbers.

Author notes

This poem has two meanings, the one that is simply layed out in the words and story and a much deeper one that I do not think many will understand.

Most poems have a hidden meaning known only to the writer. In my opinion that's the way that it should be. At least with most poems. And I think that this is wonderfully written. Nicely done.

What a shame this hasn't received any comments. I found it to be incredibly engrossing and vividly imaged. I am curious about the deeper meaning. I imagine the "dragon" is a metaphor for something else but am not sure what.

One tiny issue as I am a stickler for grammar: if you intend to have the first word in each line capitalized, please correct the last stanza as a few lines were not as so. However, I would have preferred if you did not capitalize each line. Just a preference in poems that have such short lines. It works better I think.
