Nature has dressed to impress,
in colors befitting a Queen;
a golden crown adorns the top of the trees
and leaves dance in royal deep red;
the smell of apples and cider drifts in crisp air;
chimneys exhale season's first smoke,
inviting friends and neighbors for some autumnal cheer.
Children, their cheeks all rosey squeal in delight,
tumbling in freshly raked leaves;
young lovers hold hands in the park;
and older couples reminisce under the apple tree.
Ghosts and goblins prepare for that big night,
and haunted houses with ghouls elicit frightened screams;
Flocks of geese in perfect formation up in the sky,
covering thousands of miles as winter is just around the bend.
And I for one, am taking it all in, this beauty of an autumnal day,
remembering childhood and necklaces of colored leaves;
momentary nostalgia [that first kiss under the maple tree]
when all seemed so simple-but I won't dwell in the past;
for once again it is autumn-a gift of Mother Earth
[a season for all that have remained young at heart]
