Young At Heart

Nature has dressed to impress,

in colors befitting a Queen;

a golden crown adorns the top of the trees

and leaves dance in royal deep red;

the smell of apples and cider drifts in crisp air;

chimneys exhale season's first smoke,

inviting friends and neighbors for some autumnal cheer.

Children, their cheeks all rosey squeal in delight,

tumbling in freshly raked leaves;

young lovers hold hands in the park;

and older couples reminisce under the apple tree.

Ghosts and goblins prepare for that big night,

and haunted houses with ghouls elicit frightened screams;

Flocks of geese in perfect formation up in the sky,

covering thousands of miles as winter is just around the bend.

And I for one, am taking it all in, this beauty of an autumnal day,

remembering childhood and necklaces of colored leaves;

momentary nostalgia [that first kiss under the maple tree]

when all seemed so simple-but I won't dwell in the past;

for once again it is autumn-a gift of Mother Earth

[a season for all that have remained young at heart]

    Joe, I know you are a rhymer and I very much appreciate it if it flows with as much ease as yours does. Unfortunately many times it is forced , and I am the first one to admit that my skills at rhyme are zip, zilch,zero....so I try to keep away from writing [but not reading it]It is very seldom that I give it a try {just to sort of practice}
    Blessed Be,

    Nice Story

    The story is great - but as you know I am a rhymer - so I won't comment on the rhyme or the flow - it does dance along quite well - the message is great - keep on keeping on - Bless God - Joe

    I always feel young at heart, with that boyish mischievious thoughts that got me into trouble at early age, it has never left as I search for love, that will fill that open hole inside my heart and soul, replinishing it with caring of sweet love. Very nice, my friend.

      thank you for stopping by to comment. I absolutely love that white wolf in your avatar. I used to be owned by a Siberian Husky , who unfortunately had to cross the rainbow bridge 2 years ago at the age of fourteen....he was the closest I could relate to a wolf and how I still miss him up to this day

    Fall, not really my favorite time of year but yet you have pictured it in such beauty that I have to admit this is really beautiful.
    It reminds me too much of home, that which I have lost and miss so much.

    Lovely poetry!

    Stunning work

    The imagery in this piece is just absolutely beautiful. This poem flows so well too. It is like a symphony of nature played before my eyes. Wonderful writing.

    All the best in the contest.

    Lovely ...

    My favorite season in North America was Fall. It always felt like the 'Monday morning' of the year ... a time of new beginnings ... of a new cycle ... of newness. As I reached the Fall of my life, I see the truth under my childhoold thoughts and feelings. Your words reminded me of these things. Thank you for another beautiful connection. Love, Sultan
