Drive In an Autumn forest

Two days together but parting one night
the souls of beloved in unearned flight

One day so dreary, dull and death
The next resplendent, gasps of breath

The third season's change catches my spirit
and rolls it gently falling on the breeze.
My soul welcomes Autumn with unknown gusto
and my feet dance unseen with the traipsing trees.

Oh, just yesterday sorrow was upon me and all was lost
but this morn all is vivid and at what cost?

To lay in gentle carpets will be one's fate,
and to laugh, free of pain, at an ebony gate.

Though these simple cycles come and they go,
I never cease to wonder as for the trees death's seeds sow.
As I turn on this surreal and vulnerable memory of a single day,
I remember the life, the song, the color of this magnificent play.

Author notes

I was driving home this weekend and I awoke from my stupor and realized that the day wasn't dreary as I thought it was. I could barely look at the trees because they were so bright. I have one day like this every year, where everything seems for vivid than it ever has before. I love Autumn

This is beautiful, i hope you have many more days like this. Beauty is all around us sometimes we just don't see. Excellent poem

they're beautiful, those revelations. I often have them myself, mostly in the spring, when I finally notice that things are alive, sort of like 'everything's gonna be alright' sort of feeling, and it's wonderful. I know these feelings you shared here well.

Thank you for the entry, and good luck in the contest!
