Return to Life

slow metronome of heartbeat sound
and swirling thoughts within my head
from love’s rejection to rebound

pain's tiny anvils start to pound
responsibility for life has fled
slow metronome of heartbeat sound

longing to do those things profound
not viewing each new day with dread
from love’s rejection to rebound

failure inertia has me bound
the many things I might have said
slow metronome of heartbeat sound

the demons of the night surround
and bury dreams upon my bed
from love’s rejection to rebound

with timeliness my friends astound
I wish to relish days ahead
slow metronome of heartbeat sound
from love’s rejection to rebound

Promptitude: a villanelle

A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme:
aba aba aba aba aba abaa.

The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the
poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).
