Teachers never know how one word,
one fleeting moment in time,
can change the course of someone's life.
A suggestion, a positive comment,
and someone becomes a poet.
High school is such a traumatic time
and sometimes it feels like you're useless.
An untalented jerk. A nobody.
Then, with a gentle push from some one you trust,
You find the thing that brings you joy.
A life long passion emerges
from one tiny little spark of truth
recognized in one's youth and fanned into life.
Breathed on by a beautiful soul
that hasn't a clue what she has done.

I can honestly and almost ashamedly say that had it not been for a FEW teachers who pushed and prodded me in various ways and areas of my life, I would not be the person I am today. Believe it or not, my history teacher gave me the biggest infusion of self confidence that I think anyone has ever planted within me. At the time, she would have been called a women's libber by most , but she was not so much "out there" as to ignore her own limitations or her femininity. She was, by Maya Angelou's standards, "A Phenomonal Woman", which is one of my all time favorite poems.
Her name was MS. Boothe. I will remember her always. WoW! You have really opened a floodgate of memories here.
Thank you for sharing your words with me and best wishes to you in the contest. Keep that quill dipped in ink and ever ready for use.

I relate to this as this is how I too found my love of writing only the teacher was not like your Ms. C. Mine accused me plagerism stating " There is no way you could have written this." LOL little did she know. I could have taken it negativly and never wrote again. Instead I took it as the highest compliment possible and never stopped writing since.l I love the line " a suggestion, a postive comment" Teachers are in perfect position to be used on errands of angels able to encourage and inspire those who are in need of a mentor.
