The End of Alice

“Still she haunts me, phantom-wise,
Alice moving under skies,
Never seen by waking eyes”

He didn’t know what “haunting” meant
before the gunshot blooms of progress
rent his Alice into feathered shreds.

He looks down to see her kneeling,
her naked, fingered flesh now past all
healing; dragged from books to online sight(s).

...

They rape his stories
for the fun of it.

...

The little girl grew up, wed…died;
took her pretty ghost from the masses;
cried out, surprised to be hauled back down.

He cannot help her, anymore.
His pens can’t lift her aching body.
Rumour has it that he whored her first.

...

They vandalise her
pages;  photograph her bare, bruised breasts

...

They can’t be blamed for Alice now:
Fairies forbidden in this modern age…
how it started past knowledge and care.

She can’t return to “once upon…”:
a time lost to screaming little girls
gone from parents, exiled to the Net.

...

Beginnings are passé. There are only ends
of Alice.

Author notes

The first three lines are by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) in his poem "Of Alice in Wonderland". "Alice in Wonderland" obviously belongs to Charles Dodgson.

The title is taken from a novel by A. M. Homes which focuses on pedophilia and sexual abuse.

The rest belongs to me

Please tell me what you think

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

wow. This was amazing to read. You have such a wonderful way of expresing the horrors of this world. Alice in Wonderland in oft overusd in poetry for symbolism and such, but this is a new version. Beautifully written.

I am of the opinion that all peadophiles should be castrated in the old fashioned way.
With two bricks in a room full of mothers.
Maybe I'm being a bit hard on them NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
thank you for this dark and disturbing comment on life today, sadly it is much the same year after year because of the legendary liberal thinking do gooders who can see no harm in any one.
they are for the poem nit the liberals nor the peado's.

    chilling.

this is a dark piece, which I like. I like how you took the lines and title from others, but incorperated it (so well!) into your own work. (i always admire this, cause I kinda suck at it)
like I said, dark and chilling...and wonderfully done!
    Cheers!

      Thank you for the comment

Yes, they mention what Tolkien said in Donnie Darko, although I think they get the linguist wrong (think that before the Director's Cut they said that it was Poe?).

I love that movie. I dont think I saw the cuts, but your saying the cellar door came from Poe? It's quite possible. I just love the movie! Its one of the movies that makes you think... those are hard to come by any more!

Sorry, I phrased that badly It came from Tolkien but the movie makes the mistake of saying that it was Poe, I think. The movie is amazing, though!
