The Time

There will come a time
You can see it in our eyes
When the debts will be repaid,
When remembrance to us flies

Subtle hints grow in the darkness
A stripping of innocence,
A longing to be lost
An unmaking of rhyme

These days, eyes glaze
Where they once held firm and true
And when all our bases crumble
I'll come running after you

I'd endure a hail of lead
I'd climb a mound of the dead
I'd give up my shoes--
To say I fell for you

And there will come a time
When it truly is the end
The veil descends, or lifts,
And all I want is to have been your friend

And more? Words cannot express
The length to which I'm blessed
And cursed, by thought of you
You're my unmoved mover, who

Draws from me sweet agony
Of unfulfilled fulfillment
The paradox of a station
Groaning under imagination

And in the end, will we really care?
Will we really know, when He is there?
And does that matter now, where my torment lies?
Will it answer any question, these shaking fists at skies?

If I use too many marks
Will I stop, here in the dark?
I wonder, do you know the intent
Of these words I hardly can consent?

And there down at the end
We'll rise, shaking dust from our sleep
Holding hands out of our graves?
Maybe. Maybe we'll have our own enclave

And when you know your own true name
Will it be anything like mine?
Or will you simply fade with us
Into the bread and wine?

I love you, my dear,
Though you don't know who you are
Or how far we are
From the time to end the time.
