The trees and I know well
to savor last warming days
for even now north winds flex
and rehearse upon falling leaves;
red cheeks, watery eyes
blurring in swirling shades.
The moon looks down upon whirling change
in the constant cycle of faces
and I wink at the phase and know
bundled glances when seeing it next;
feeling night air nip my skin.
Aromas of mulling sticks and cider,
pumpkins brighten yards and scenes
as the age old celebrations of harvest rise
in rituals practiced but no longer understood;
as ripe autumn fruits bring succulent sweetness.
For in this day so few ever touch
the bounty as nature brings; cool blooming
reds, yellow hearts and pastel flowers
brighten the busiest day-to-day.
The trees and I know well,
these sweet and sudden days;
the times of change bring delights and soon,
oh far too sudden, swift and soon;
surprising still, it will all have gone away.
