Once upon a midnight, cold
dark and eerie, are stories told
of monsters, hauntings, creatures of old
Some say the old castle atop the hill
is haunted by the ghosts still
they scream and torture, always will
Until the time when laid to rest
finally at peace, they’ve passed the test
no longer frightening all the guests
But many moons will come and go
before these creatures somehow know
until then their forms are sure to show
The castle halls know all, believe
as their secrets kept, now all shall grieve
before these haunting take their leave
Loss of Grandpa Wyles, the whole town wept
that poor man murdered as he slept
continued many years, a secret kept
Since that time, each All Hallows Eve
as child and grown-ups alike grieve
and fear that which they most believe
Sounds of screams throughout the halls
echoing, bouncing from the walls
like pallid, aimless, lifeless dolls
Weird stories through the years are told
of rattling chains and hidden gold
of monsters, hauntings, creatures of old
So don’t go near the castle Huguelot
on All Hallows Eve, no, do not
‘lest you, too shall be besot

Dear Dee,
Like Heath, I read with some surprise
your version of Grandpa's demise
for I had, as a youth, been told
that he died outside in the cold
while chasing fairies in the wood
after he'd eaten Grandma's pud.
They found him, stiff, and brought him back,
dead from a massive heart attack
and while inside that coffin thing
some yobbo stole his signet ring.
Please do not let it slip your mind
that you have vowed that ring to find
because his spirit can't find rest
till you complete your promised quest.
~~~
I agree with Sir Yemassee that it's time YOU won a contest! I'm gonna command Heathcote to vote for you.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)
Hugh, as I've told you more than once...
Grandpa Hugh was murdered
that night in his bed as he slept
Now we reap the consequence
of a secret well kept
For we all pay the price of deception
and these hauntings bear this out
Grandpa Hughs was a kindly man
of this there is no doubt
Though Grandma Hugh's pud
may indeed have been an explaination
for his early retirement that night
as it had caused him to have indigestion
I intend to write the story true
so watch for it and you'll soon see
what happened that night
will no longer remain a mystery
Dear Dee,
Well, this must be the first I've read
what never entered in my head
that Hugh's Grandpa was killed in bed.
For I had always understood
although I don't know why I should
that he was killed by Grandma's pud.
I'll have to have another look,
I read it somewhere in a book
Hugh's Grandma was a rotten cook.
I'm sure his Grandpa came to rue it
after eating Grandma's awful suet!!
~~~
Thanks for giving us the dinkum oil.
This poem deserves hefty support in the voting. Good luck.
Applause and love, Heathcote (HEROY)

We all tend to believe what we're told unless there's evidence against it. But just you wait and see, the truth will out soon
-
-
Eerie but excellent terror tale told and even an image of a real ghost to boot!

-
Was Grandpa Wyles murdered? Someone should write his complete history so we know.
Hidden gold? Oh my...keep Hugh distracted, I'm going on a little digging spree!
I think what we think are noises made by ghosts in the castle is just me groaning after eating all my trick or treat candy.
Well written poem. I think it's your time to win.

Are you sure you didn't get a taste of Grandma Wyles left over pudding, Yem. It has gained quite a reputation since Grandpa Wyles passed on, but believe me... it is NOT what killed him.

Happy Halloween to Catz!
You have done old Grandpa Whyles up proud. Maybe he will be at peace now. Best of the season to a great poet!

Thank you, Wesley for another of your always wonderful comments... from one great poet to another
