[ miles. ]

[ miles. ]

i sang for ten miles straight
with the dashboard as my pastor
hearing all my sins confinded
in the shelter of passing streetlamps
scattered along the narrow expanse
of highway, north to south,
forward or back;
nothing is black and white
but all shades of grey imaginable
in between.

speed of one hundred and twenty
i can't catch up with my past mistakes
always on the horizon of my rearview mirror
sometimes obscured by the highbeams of
the vehicle behind -
blinding, painful, but real
tangible.

pious to the music of my heart
fills hollows of doubt in the pit of my
stomach, twisted and turned
like the road along the lake's weak
underbelly, touch and go
i pray with the nonsensical drumbeats
of my fingertips on the window
ignoring the world past my own hand.

it didn't occur to me to shift gears
or slow down, or stop at red lights
the universe revolved around the feeling
of go go go
full speed ahead
outrace what history has yet to write
to get to what has already been written
once again.

i'm living version two point oh of
yesterday, and all too willing to tell it
all to my dashboard bound pastor;
and many miles to go.

Interesting comparisons of life's mistakes with driving, speed and highways as life is a constant journey. Liked the line "outrace what history has yet to write" esp. followed by the conclusion that you really can't. A very thought provoking poem.

This is a beautiful poem. There's subtle imagery and yet it's very simple in it's own way. The symbols and continuous theme of the vehicle are really powerful.

Lol. The background... it was my little attempt at irony. That smiley sun looks so.. demeaning. lmao.
