they called you
your government
majority wishes
they voted
so you flew
alone over oceans
to spend nights
in a desert bunker
survive attacks
dangerous days
in the air
seventy missions
protecting fellow
ground Marines
in harm’s way
comrades died
not once, but twice
you went leaving
a wife, little kids
safely home now
your countrymen
mostly believe
yours was
a disservice
a mistake ...
it’s ok, Son.
Author notes
Going home.
They say there's a place
where dreams have all gone
They never said where
but I think I know
It's miles through the night
just over the dawn
on the road that will take me home
Love waits for me 'round the bend
Leads me endlessly on
Surely sorrows shall find their end
and all our troubles will be gone
And I'll know what I've lost and all that I've won
when the road finally takes me home

My son is a mature career military person that understands the military mission, the politics and the public reaction ... before, during and after a conflict. I wrote this for all those that serve bravely and do not have that understanding. Thanks for your review!!

When I was in the service I wished upon wishes that critics could understand what was in my heart and soul and feel how proud I felt serving my country. It was such a personal choice and I don't think anyone could ever steal my pride away...to this day~ Lovely penning, strong emotions within your lines, thanks for sharing

Beautiful and Poignant
We send them off to war and prepare them to fight- but we don't prepare them for the long hard march home...we don't prepare them for facing themselves after seeing things that no human being should ever see...We don't prepare them for peace.
This is beautiful and sad and ever so poignant.
